Our two cultural prefects, along with Mrs Barlow co-ordinate the cultural groups each year. Groups vary each year, depending on the interests of Year 12 and 13 students who are the leaders of their chosen groups. Groups are established in Term 1, and all students in the school are encouraged to join a cultural group. Being of that culture is not a prerequisite.
Leaders work with students to prepare a group performance for Cultural Night and Mercy Day at the end of Term 3. Practices occur in Terms 2 and 3. Cultural prefects organise the events and MC both concerts.
In 2017, we had 14 groups perform at Cultural Night and on Mercy Day – our Kapa Haka Group, Chinese, Cook Island, Dutch, French, Filipino, German, Indian, Irish, Japanese, Korean, Samoan, Spanish and Tongan groups all performed brilliantly.
Students organise food stalls on International Day in Term 1 to help raise funds for their Mercy Day performances. It is a wonderful opportunity for girls to celebrate and learn about the many cultures we have at St Mary’s College.
