The two cultural prefects with Mrs Barlow co-ordinate the cultural groups each year. The groups vary each year, depending on the interests of the Year 12 and Year 13 students who are the leaders of their chosen groups. Groups are set up in Term 1 and all students in the school are encouraged to join a cultural group. Being of that culture is not a prerequisite.

Leaders work with students to prepare a group performance for Mercy Day and the Cultural Evening in the last few days of Term 3. Practices happen in Terms 2 and 3. Cultural prefects organise the events and MC both concerts.

For 2016 there were 15 groups – our Kapahaka Group, Chinese, Cook Island, Croatian, French, Filipino, German/Austrian, Indian, Irish, Japanese, Korean, Lebanese, Samoan, Spanish and Tongan.

Students organise food stalls on International Day in Term 1 to help raise funds for their Mercy Day performances. It is a wonderful opportunity for girls to celebrate and learn about the many cultures we have at St Mary’s College.
